Whitbread were at the time a leading brewer and owner of pubs across England, whereas now they own hotels like Premium Inn and food outlets like Pizza Hut and Brewers Fare. The screw down case back has an inscription showing this watch was given by Whitbread & Company Ltd for 20 years long service. The movement is cased in a stainless steel, which is unpolished so will show light scratches and does have some marks on the lugs we have been unable to clean off. This has 25 jewels, quickset date and the optional hacking function on the seconds for accurate time setting, and all is working well. The movement used is Eterna’s 2824, which later became ETA’s 2824 when Eterna sold off their movement production company ETA. This was quite a step forward in improving early automatic watches, and is still used today. The crown is signed with the five ball bearing logo that Eterna adopted after inventing the ball bearing rotor on automatic watches, and this logo is also on the centre of the acrylic crystal. Otherwise, everything else on this watch is how it left Switzerland. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred, and the buckle is not the original.
